The Journey Story

KIA presents “Whatever Your Journey”, a story showcasing the unique beauty of South Africa and the beauty of our Rainbow Nation. Follow the Van der Westhuizen family as they pack up their KIA Sorento and hit the road to attend the wedding of Mr van der Westhuizen’s colleague, Luzuko, in the Eastern Cape. It’s a typical South African road trip, complete with padkos, and interspersed with the family doing their best to wrap their tongues around the unique sounds and nuances of the Xhosa language. But there’s a big surprise waiting for them on arrival...

“We wanted a brand story that was going to be authentic and South African.”

“The script we chose had to allow people to form a personal, human connection with the KIA brand.”

“We get to follow a South African family on a road trip filled with humour, authenticity and majestic landscapes.“

The Journey Continues

KIA Motors – globally renowned as the maker of cars for the young and the young-at-heart – this year celebrates 21 years of surprising South Africa. Over the years, the brand has developed a unique and award-winning style, offering unique product designs, smart technologies and enjoyable services that not only surprise and delight its owners and drivers, but keep them moving forward. As we gear up to celebrate our 21st birthday, we wanted to showcase the KIA brand in a manner that is as uniquely South African as our customers.

“While KIA is a global brand, our presence in South Africa is as bold, fun and multilayered as the people that drive our cars,” says Christo Valentyn, Brand Marketing and Communications Manager at KIA Motors South Africa. “As a brand, KIA inspires people to choose positivity and to look on the bright side of life. It speaks to that uniquely South African resilience that drive us to find the humour, even when under pressure”

To achieve this, KIA Motors South Africa worked with Old Friends Young Talent (OFYT) to conceptualise a uniquely South African advertisement. “We wanted a brand story that was going to be authentic and South African,” says Chris Gotz, National Creative Director at OFYT. “The script we chose had to allow people to form a personal, human connection with the KIA brand, so wee intentionally didn’t look at product messaging or features. We wanted to connect through a simple human truth, that as South Africans we make the most of whatever comes our way, no matter what the situation.”

Bringing the story to life, KIA Motors and OFYT worked with director Anton Visser of Patriot Films. “KIA is rapidly establishing themselves as a beloved South African brand, and it’s all thanks to charming, unique, local work like this,” he says. “It’s the kind of brave and epic script you hope for as a director

“I say brave because it shows a potentially difficult situation in a climate where there seems to be some tension between South Africans. Our job was to tell this in a way that was humorous and fun, while recognising that we're all just human and that there’s more that binds us together than what pushes us apart. The beautiful South African landscape is as much a character as anyone else, and naturally the KIA is what carries them safely on this funny, awkward and ultimately charming voyage of discovery.”
